What to Wear: Family Session
Struggling to style your family session?
The secret to timeless family photos isn’t everyone wearing the same outfit - it’s about creating a cohesive look that lets your family’s personality shine through.
Here are my top tips for styling your upcoming family session:
The family pictured is a great example: They are wearing warm, earthy neutrals with a variety of textures & layers perfect for providing visual interest to any photo while not taking away from the focus of the photo - your family!
The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don’t Match
Ditch the matching white tees. Pick a palette and mix different shades and textures.
Choose a Color Palette
Neutrals & Earth Tones - whites, creams, taupes, tans, and soft grays. These are timeless and put a focus on the family’s faces.
Muted Tones - If you want color, go for muted versionsl ike dusty blue, sage green, mustard yellow, or burnt organe.
Rule of Three - Aims for at least 3 colors in your palette to create depth and visual interest.
Start with One Outfit
Pick one “lead” outfit (like Mom’s dress) and build the rest of the family’s look from there.
Patterns & Logos
Small patterns like subtle florals and thin stripes are great. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and tiny, busy patterns (which can cause a “moire” flickering effect in photos).
Texture is Your Best Friend
You can add visual interest to your photos with different fabrics: chunky knits, linen, lace, denim, or corduroy.
Layers (cardigans, hats, scarves) also add movement and variety to your shots.
Don’t Forget the Feet
Shoes can make or break an outfit. Avoid athletic sneakers or flip-flops. Opt for leather boots, loafters, dainty sandals, or even go barefoot for beach/home sessions.
Comfort is Key
If you feel good, you’ll look good. If the kids feel itchy or restricted, it will show in their expressions. Choose soft, breathable fabrics that allow you to move and play!
